Jewelry display stands are essential tools for organizing, protecting, and showcasing your favorite necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings. Whether you want to decorate your vanity space with them, sell jewelry at craft fairs, or create thoughtful gifts using them, building one yourself can be cost-effective, creative and customizable – creating necklace trees, earring holders and ring dishes is made simple using basic tools and materials available readily. This guide will walk you through designing and building three common types of display stands: necklace trees, earring holders and ring dishes using easily accessible materials and basic tools.

    1.Accumulate Materials and Tools

To start off, collect materials that combine durability, aesthetics and affordability. These supplies may be found at craft stores, hardware stores or reclaimed from household items (like old wooden blocks or mason jars). Here’s an outline of what will be needed

    Gather Essential Supplies

Base Materials: Wood blocks (2-4 inches thick), ceramic coasters, mason jars or thick cardboard tubes can all be great options to start your creative projects on a budget-friendly path. As for structures: Thin wooden dowels (1/4-1/2 inch diameter), wire (18 gauge earrings), or twine can provide structural supports.
Adhesives: Choose among three effective adhesives, hot glue gun (quick-drying and ideal for wood/metal), E6000 (strong enough to secure glass/ceramic surfaces), or white craft glue (for paper/cardboard surfaces).
Finishing supplies: Sandpaper of 120-220 grit to smooth wood), paint (acrylic, spray paint or chalk paint), decoupage glue such as Mod Podge with tissue paper/fabric, beads ribbons or metallic foil decorative elements as decoupage elements; ruler and pencil (for measuring and marking); tools:

Scissors or wire cutters (for trimming wire/dowels). Drill with small bits (optional; to create holes in wood bases). Paintbrushes or foam rollers (for applying paint).

    2. Prepare Your Workspace and Materials

First, begin by setting up a clean and flat workspace–you may wish to cover it with newspaper or craft mat to protect surfaces from glue and paint dripping off. Next, prepare all necessary materials.
Wooden bases/dowels: To achieve an attractive finish on wooden bases/dowels, lightly sand with 120-grit sandpaper to remove splinters before smoothing them with 220-grit sandpaper for a soft surface finish. Wipe away dust using a damp cloth.Reusing items: When it comes to mason jars and cardboard tubes from paper towels, ensure they are thoroughly cleaned out before removing labels and cutting to your desired height and sealing their ends with tape to avoid fraying.

Wire (for earrings): To straighten wire without kinks, straighten with either your hands or pliers.

    3. Craft Specific Display Stands

This guide offers step-by-step instructions for three of the most popular jewelry display styles. Adapt sizes and designs according to your jewelry collection–for instance, create taller necklace trees for long chains or wider earring holders for stud earrings.

    4. Necklace Tree Display Stand

A necklace tree is the ideal way to keep chains untangled and visible; it works especially well for necklaces of various lengths.

Mark the Base: Grab your wooden block (3×3 inches is ideal) and use a pencil to mark its center – this is where your main dowel will go! For multi-branch trees, mark 2-3 additional spots about an inch away.
Attach the main dowel: Apply a thick layer of hot glue or E6000 to one end of an 8-12 inch wooden dowel and press firmly into its desired location on the base. Allow 1-2 minutes or the adhesive’s drying time before holding for extra stability if necessary; alternatively, drill a small hole slightly smaller than your dowel first, insert and glue before reinserting your dowel into it.

Add branches (optional): Cut shorter dowels (3-5 inches long). Tilt each branch 45 degrees at an angle and glue one end of it (2-3 inches from the top). Space them evenly across your design in order to avoid overcrowding.

Finish: Once the glue dries, paint your tree with any of your preferred colors (such as matte white, gold, or pastel hues). For an added textural element, wrap twine around the dowel and branches before securing with glue at either end for added dimension. Allow this project to fully dry (2-4 hours) before using.

    5. Earring Holder for Studs and Hoops)

This earring holder utilizes wire or mesh panels to organize earrings. It works great for both studs (which need small holes) and hoops (which hang from wire).

Prepare the Base: As the foundation, use either a ceramic coaster or wooden block. If using wire, cut a piece of 16 gauge wire into an 8×4 rectangle; bend its top two corners using pliers into small loops for hanging the holder (if desired).

Create holes for studs: When using a wooden base, drill small (1/16-inch diameter) holes at 1″ intervals in an even grid pattern (1 inch apart) onto its top surface; these will act as pegs to hold your earrings studs in place. When using a wire holder instead, use wire cutters to cut small slits (1 inch apart) in its wire mesh or simply wrap thin wire around its grid to form “pegs” – creating holes for the earrings to sit upon.

Attach the wire/mesh to the base: If using a wire panel, secure its base edge with E6000 glue. With wooden bases featuring pre-drilled holes, simply leave them as-is or add a small wooden dowel on either side to suspend hoop earrings.

Finish: For a sleek finish, paint the base and wire with metallic spray paint (silver or rose gold) for a professional appearance. Alternately, decoupage it using tissue paper or fabric so as to complement your decor.

    6. Ring Dish with a Stand

Ring dishes can make life much simpler when it comes to daily-wear rings; adding a stand makes retrieval even simpler. Pick the ideal dish: From small ceramic dishes from dollar stores or thrift shops to reusing mason jar lids or clay dishes (baking it according to instructions first may help).

Make the Stand: Cut a 4-inch wooden dowel into two 4-inch pieces: one for vertical support (to keep dish at an angle during access) and one 3-inch piece (crossbar). Glue the vertical dowel piece to the back edge of dish’s base before attaching crossbar at top with slight tilt forward for easier access to dish.

Finish: After painting both pieces with chalk paint, distress the edges using sandpaper for an authentic shabby-chic aesthetic. Finally, add a coat of Mod Podge sealant to prevent chipping of the paintwork and ensure longevity of this project.

    7. Tips for Customization and Care

Adapt to Your Decor Choose colors and materials that complement the environment where you’re placing it–for instance, choose macrame necklace hangers to evoke boho chic or modern stands painted in marble-look paint for modern vanity spaces.

Add storage: Attach a small dish to the base of a necklace tree to hold rings or earrings, while for bracelet stands use thick dowel wrapped in fabric and wrapped with foam padding (to prevent slipperiness).
Care for your stand: For wooden stands, avoid getting them wet (wipe up spills immediately) and dust metal/wire stands regularly with a soft cloth. If using paint to decorate the stand, touch up chips using a small brush so it always appears new.

Crafting your own jewelry display stand is a fun and cost-effective way to organize your collection while adding a personal touch to any room in which it stands. Our step-by-step instructions are user friendly so anyone from novice crafters to experienced makers will have no difficulty creating something truly exceptional! Experiment with materials, colors, and designs until you create something that showcases both your creativity (and jewelry collection!).
